The INSOIL project lives through the hard and dedicated work of our partners. In a “Meet our Partners” series of posts, we would like to introduce the teams behind the work conducted in the project, and share some insight into the people in this great consortium! This week, we will kick this series off with SABIOMATERIALS.
SABIOMATERIALS is an Italian SME active in the development, production and market of a wide range of bio-based and biodegradable materials (bioplastics). Our range of advanced sustainable materials is suitable for manufacturing different products like durable high-end articles, compostable packaging and biodegradable materials for agriculture and aquaculture applications. Moreover, SABIOMATERIALS offers updated knowledge of plastic industry markets about melt mixing processes aimed to produce thermoplastics bio-based and biodegradable materials and updated knowledge about application’s technical requirements and regulations. Thus, SABIOMATERIALS can tailor bioplastics to meet technological and environmental requirements for a wide range of applications. The expertise of SABIOMATERIALS includes IP about specific composition containing PHA.
The principal bioplastic materials produced from SABIOMATERIALS are BIODURA®, BIODEGRA® and TERRALIX®. BIODURA® is a sustainable material: responsibly sourced, recyclable and biodegradable. We have designed BIODURA® to create practical, durable and attractive objects that make our lives easier. BIODEGRA® is a sustainable material designed to produce packaging articles. BIODEGRA® has
been designed to be a compostable material with a sustainable end-of-life. TERRALIX®, our main product, is a family of bioplastic materials suitable to produce agricultural items. TERRALIX® materials is certified biodegradable in soil from TUV Austria.
Within the INSOIL project SABIOMATERIALS is WP4 leader and tasks leader in WP2 and 3. The main role is the optimization of biopolymer compounds based on PHA produced inside of the project. SABIOMATERIALS is also responsible for industrial processes, such as the production of agricultural applications like in-soil biodegradable plant guards.
SABIOMATERIALS’ team involved in the project consists of three members.
Dr. Alessandro Carfagnini, with a background in chemistry and more than 15 years of expertise in plastic and bioplastic companies, is the CEO and founder of the company SABIOMAERIALS. In INSOIL, he is responsible for project management and technical activities.
Dr. Michele Rossi, also with a chemistry background with expertise in materials design and materials formulation of bio-based and biodegradable polymers for different applications (i.e. agriculture, packaging and durable goods). His main role in INSOIL is the development of new bio-based and biodegradable material formulations and project management.
The third member of the team, Mr. Rocco Filippi, has more than 10 years of expertise in equipment maintenance and technical activity. In the INSOIL project, he is involved in technical activities during extrusion production, set up and
maintenance of SABIOMATERIALS equipment.
